A year ago, Taiwanese music critic Jiao Yuanpu brought his book "The Skill of Music" to Beijing. At that time, he once described his innovations in various concerts in Taiwan, combining literature and music, setting up different themed concerts, hoping that some kind of convergence could be formed between literature readers and music fans. A year later, he announced that this unique literary concert would be brought to Beijing. On November 5, the concert "Reading Shakespeare with Joy" will be performed at the Beijing Concert Hall.
This concert, which includes explanations and performances, is about 120 minutes long and includes six works related to Shakespeare, namely "Twelfth Night", "Othello", "Much Ado About Nothing", "Hamlet", "Romeo and Juliet" and "A Midsummer Night's Dream". The explanation time is about 70 minutes. In Taiwan, Jiao Yuanpu had already held two Shakespeare lecture concerts two years ago. Now that he came to Beijing, he combined the two concerts into one.
Jiao Yuanpu himself is both a music fan and a literature fan. He said that literature and music are inherently interoperable, and neither should set limitations on each other. "If you want to understand music, shouldn't you read the works?" Many composers are also inspired by many other art forms when they create. ”In addition to Shakespeare, Jiao Yuanpu has also organized lectures and concerts by different writers such as Kundera, Tolstoy, Haruki Murakami, and Pushkin. Among them, the most challenging one is "Reading Proust." "In Search of Lost Time itself is already very challenging, and it has to be given to everyone in two hours." "Some people also asked him how he still had time to read when he was so busy. Jiao Yuanpu's answer was, "If you want to read, you must have time." ”
Jiao Yuanpu’s original intention in organizing these concerts is to give more musicians performance opportunities. If a musician does not have enough performance opportunities after the age of 30, who would lock himself in the piano room for 6 hours a day? "I have interviewed some pianists who were not the best when they were 18 or 9 years old, nor were they the best when they were 27 or 8 years old. But after the age of 40, they are extremely good and beat others, because they are lucky and have always had enough performance opportunities. We are looking at the end. ”
In "The Skill of Music", Jiao Yuanpu talked about many classical music viewing etiquette. He said that when it comes to his own concerts, he actually doesn't mind what the audience wears, but he would like the audience to keep quiet. Jiao Yuanpu also attended Yuja Wang's concert at the National Center for the Performing Arts a while ago. There was a lot of noise at the venue, so much so that Yuja Wang even complained backstage that there were "dong-dong-dong" sounds everywhere during the performance. Jiao Yuanpu emphasized that there are two kinds of silence in the audience, one is the silence of sleeping and the other is the silence of concentration. Of course he hopes it is the latter.
As for whether the reason for bringing children to the concert is, Jiao Yuanpu said that as long as the children are not noisy, of course it is fine. There is no reason to use age or height as a limit. Even children of the appropriate age should come to the concert if they are noisy. Parents should be self-aware.
In addition to his upcoming concert on November 5, Jiao Yuanpu also strongly recommends pianist Paul Skoda’s solo concert on November 6 and pianist Deng Taishan’s solo concert on November 27. The performance venues are all Beijing Concert Halls.
