As Chinese science fiction writers won the Hugo Award for two consecutive years, Chinese science fiction literature suddenly gained public attention. On the evening of the 11th, another major award in the Chinese science fiction community, the Chinese Science Fiction Nebula Award, was unveiled at the National Library. Dong Renwei, one of the initiators of the Nebula Award and a member of the jury, believes that the works that won the Chinese Science Fiction Nebula Award this time are not inferior to those that won the Nebula Award and the Hugo Award in the United States abroad, but they lack good translations.
This view was also supported by other guests at the award ceremony. Cat Rambo, chairman of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association of America, Crystal M. Huff, chairman of the 2017 World Science Fiction Convention, and Fujii Taiyo, president of the Japan Science Fiction Writers Club, all expressed their willingness to select Chinese science fiction works in the American Nebula Awards and Hugo Awards, but they suffered from the lack of translation.
At the opening ceremony, several generations of Chinese science fiction writers appeared on the red carpet. Hao Jingfang, who had just won the Hugo Award, attended as an award guest and brought her two-year-old daughter with her. Last year's Hugo Award winner Liu Cixin, as one of the judges, appeared on the stage at the beginning wearing a "Star Wars" robe and holding a lightsaber. The scene was almost a science fiction party.
In the end, Jiang Bo's "Heart of the Galaxy 3: Chasing Light and Shadow" won the gold medal for novels. "Heart of the Galaxy" is a space opera-style novel that tells the story of multiple forces in the universe competing for control of the Galaxy in the Heart of the Galaxy. Dong Renwei, one of the initiators of the Nebula Award and a member of the jury, commented in an interview with Interface Culture that "the creativity of this work is unheard of in the world, the entire structure is grand, and there are many innovations in the space opera genre." This is the first time that Jiang Bo, a representative writer of the "newer generation", has won the Nebula Gold Award. When receiving the award, Jiang Bo could not hide his excitement and said that his "hands were a little shaking." "I have been writing science fiction for about 13 years. I am the 'tortoise' in the tortoise and the hare race. I have been climbing slowly for 13 years, but I have never given up. Now I have this good result, and I am very happy. For the "rabbit" and "tortoise" friends here, we can run together. Running is life and scenery."
The gold medal for the novella was won by "When the Sun Falls" by the emerging science fiction writer Zhang Ran and "Chimera" by Gu Shi. The gold medal for the short story was awarded to "Ba Lin" by Chen Qiufan. Chen Qiufan, like Jiang Bo, is one of the two standard-bearers of the newer generation of science fiction writers. Dong Renwei commented on him that his ideas are "realistic science fiction", which is very down-to-earth, writes about the visible future, and is very literary. "He should be the second person to win the Hugo Award. This time he translated together with Hao Jingfang, and they took a fancy to Hao Jingfang. But he will eventually achieve results, and foreign readers like him very much."
After Liu Cixin and Hao Jingfang won the Hugo Award, some people commented that Chinese science fiction is in a state of "half sea water, half fire", on the one hand, the two winners are very popular, on the other hand, a large number of other science fiction writers are rarely known, and science fiction still tends to be niche and within the circle. In order to promote science fiction to the public, the Nebula Award not only rewards science fiction literature, but also attaches great importance to children's science fiction and the film and television of science fiction. It awards the Best Children's Science Fiction Work Award, the Best Youth Work Award and the Best Science Fiction Film Creative Award. The only award that Liu Cixin presented as an award guest that night was the Best Youth Work Award. More than a dozen teenagers who won gold and silver awards took the trophy from his hands.
The Best Creative Science Fiction Film Award was jointly won by He Xi's "Tian Nian" and Jiang Bo's "Heart of the Galaxy Trilogy". The film and television rights of these two works have been purchased, and it is planned to use three to five years to create a true science fiction blockbuster. "Galaxy Heart" has been signed by Wanda Film and Television, saying it will become China's "Star Wars". Not long ago, the organizing committee of the Nebula Awards also awarded the Nebula Award to the Chinese science fiction film, but Dong Renwei said that the jury "didn't find a film that could be awarded the award at all and reluctantly awarded it." China's science fiction movies are still far from mature. The Nebula Award hopes to connect the industrial chains of literature and film and television, promote the popularity of Chinese science fiction through film and television, and thereby promote the development of science fiction literature.
